Only Idiots Search For The Best Diet Plan

By Jenny Knight

Searching for the best diet plan? Put simply the best diet plan is the one that works best for you. If you are needing to lose weight, a successful diet plan should combine healthy eating with a reduction of the foods that produce the extra fat. If you need to put on weight (yes, some people have to!) then it will probably be based around healthy but fattening ingredients, such as nuts, dairy products and olive oil. In a strange quirk of fate, these same foods can also be used in what may turn out to be the best diet plan for you.

The media seems obsessed with the body beautiful and everybody being the same weight and build. The best celebrities are the ones with the perfect looks and anyone who carries more weight that they do is deemed a loser or a figure of fun. The language sums it up: "The Biggest Loser" and "Fat Patrol" are typical examples. We've got to want to lose weight for the right reasons. A few extra pounds here and there probably will not be a problem, but lots of extra weight could be unhealthy and dangerous.

What we need to look for is a diet regime that will work in losing (or gaining) weight and keep us healthy at the same time. Do not rely on the so-called gurus and experts to help out. A lot of these guys make their money by peddling products that work a little bit but that do not cure the problem. If you can lose weight and keep the pounds off, they've lost you as a customer. Beware of anyone selling you products or who has their own range of diet meals or medications.

You might have heard a lot in recent years about the "low carbohydrate" diet. A more extreme variation of this is the Atkins Diet. These types of programs involve cutting carbohydrates (bread, pasta and so on) out of your diet totally. I don't like this type of diet because they cannot be sustained for long. Eventually your body will kick in and stop the diet from working. It is far better in my opinion to have a balanced diet containing both carbs and protein. That is the best diet plan for almost everyone.

You'll probably be aware of the "low-carbs" diet and may even be contemplating using it or one of its variations, such as the Atkins. My advice is don't. This is because to completely cut out carbohydrates such as rice, pasta and bread is not going to produce a balanced diet. Extreme or fad diets will never work in the long-term. Far better for you to work on producing a balanced program: that is the best diet plan for you.

If you are interested in dieting more for your health than for weight loss, then balance is the key. There are several different food groups, and the advice from experts is that you should eat a certain amount from each group every day. Although the advice can change, according to the latest research, there are some constants; drinking lots of water, for example, or eating several portions of fresh fruit and vegetables. Those who have to lower their cholesterol levels for the good of their health can even consider an entirely vegetarian diet. Minus the "bad" saturated fats, the best diet plan will have you feeling healthier in just a few months.
