Things To Know About Halal MRE Rations

By Leanna Freeman

MRE is the abbreviation of the term Meal Ready to Eat, and a Halal MRE refers to those meals specifically made for Muslims. These are prepackaged products that you find mainly in the military. They form an important part of the diet for Muslim fighters because they are processed to the rigorous standards required by their Islamic religion. However, it's not just combat troops who can eat these. Anyone who wants food on the go and needs to travel fairly light can pack these in their luggage. As a result, people like campers and hikers use them too.

The portions are designed to provide the individual with the full range of food requirements. That's why they have in one MRE ration things like a side dishes, a main meal, dessert, snack and a drink. The shelf life of these foods is about six months, and often they come with an expiry date, so it's best to check the side of the packet for this.

Something people often think is that Kosher food can be eaten by Muslims, but this is not always the case. Some Kosher food has alcohol in it, which is strictly forbidden in Islam. And some Kosher food also contains certain food coloring and flavorings, like gelatin, which are expressly prohibited from the Muslim diet.

It's important to remember that Halal foods, and therefore these ration packs, have to be prepared to certain standards. If there is meat in them, it has to have been slaughtered according to their special needs. Additionally, any knives or kitchen equipment absolutely has to be really clean, and free from any trace of food that has been prepared in a non-Halal way.

Among the other dietary requirements of Muslims is the need to refrain from consuming pork and any pork-related products. They can eat fruits, vegetables and grains and therefore it might be worth considering a vegetarian pack if there are no others available.

The food can be eaten hot or cold and the military food packs more often than not come with a heat pad. If a heat pad is not available then by leaving the package on a hot car engine for 10 minutes, or under the burning sun for about 30, you should have a warm meal.

Due to being light in weight, they are great in an emergency situation and can be easily carried around by the soldier, backpacker or by a camper. They come in at around 1200 calories and although some may think this a rather low figure, they are designed to supply all the nutrition that troops need. However, for hikers that feel like they need more calories there are portions that have distinctly higher calorie counts, but these may or may not include the heat pad.

The many uses of Halal MRE make it a very handy ration to have around. Whether it's to feed soldiers or to sustain those thrill seekers that like to travel light, they are nutritious and available online. Remember, that to buy single packs costs more than buying in bulk.
