The future of dentistry

By Leon S. Carroll

Dentistry is an ever changing profession and since it first started it has changed drastically to get to the stage which it is current at. Most treatments can be done very quickly and very easily by dentists now and they are becoming both less painful and also much cheaper for patients all of the time. That said there are still areas to be improved and even as this is written new methods, technologies and initiatives are being developed to move dentistry on to the next stage.

One of the most important things that is already happening but will happen on a wider scale in the future is Eco-Dentistry. This initiative is set to make dentistry much more environmentally friendly through a number of large changes. The waste which dentistry currently produces is far too high and Eco-Dentistry is going to help the industry to alter this. In addition it will also help to reduce the pollution it produces both directly and indirectly.

The industry is also likely to see the introduction of some truly amazing new tools in the coming years. These will include an extremely accurate too which sprays sand or silica so that teeth can be cut and shaped very finely to make filling them easier. Similarly another tool which uses jets of plasma is being developed to painlessly remove bacteria from teeth.

Nanotechnology is also likely to be introduced in the next few years and will entirely revolutionise dentistry. Nanotechnology is where matter is manipulated at a molecular and atomic level and it is already being used in some industries. Once introduced to dentistry it is likely to be used for fillings and also the creation of entire artificial teeth.

There are also numerous other potential developments in dentistry and changes are happening all the time. Recently it was revealed that alcohol based mouthwashes might be bad for a person's oral health and so there is a high likelihood that a replacement for these is already under development to be released very soon.
