How to Make a Statement With Your Home's Entryway

By Abbie Osborne-Wilson

The first thing a visitor to your home will see is the entryway. You want the entry way to be the welcome center for your home; it should be warm and inviting and is your chance to make a good first impression. The greatest tool you have in creating a welcoming atmosphere is the decor you choose for the entryway.

Before you begin decorating your entryway you need to think about what mood you want to place in your entryway; tranquil, charming, or lived in. You can even make it appear formal.

It doesn't matter whether your entryway is large or small you can still make your guests feel welcome. If your entryway is large then you can add a hall tree with a storage bench so your guests can hang their coats or sit down and remove their dirty shoes before walking into your home.

If you want a tranquil room then you want to place an indoor fountain inside the entryway so you can create a calm feeling as soon as they open the door.

Lighting is very important in the entryway but it is often times overlooked when decorating. You can complete the sooth warm feel to your entryway by adding the right amount of light. You can use an indirect soft light to achieve a calm mood. If you are displaying artwork in your entryway you will want to have wall sconces or mini sconce lights. If your entryway has a high ceiling then try placing a chandelier in the room. You can even add wall lighting to the ceiling lighting when your ceiling is too tall.

You can set the mood immediately when your guests step into the room. Highlight the entryway with a natural look of marble, granite, or onyx.

The last item is one of the most critical to defining the atmosphere of any room, rugs. No matter if your style is traditional, ultra modern or quaint; nothing does more to complete the look than your selection of rugs. Rugs serve two purposes, functional and aesthetic. Rugs protect the flooring while adding warmth, richness and beauty. Entryway rugs should be durable since they lie in high traffic areas generally. One way to save your entryway rug is to provide a good doormat outside the door for wiping feet. For a long, narrow entryway runners are the optimal solution. In rooms that are irregular shaped, use many small rugs. Use small rugs underneath entryway furniture to accentuate each piece.

You want to make the best first impression so to do this you need the right lighting, the best decor, and a beautiful area rug. It's amazing how that one moment can mean so much.
